Dorothy met Zeb when she and Uncle Henry came to San Francisco to visit. When Zeb picked Dorothy up at Hugson's Siding, she was accompanied by her cat, Eureka. He arrives in a carriage pulled by his horse, Jim, and on their way to the ranch there is a terrible earthquake and they all accidentally fall into the cracks of the Earth that open up. After falling for a very long time, they light in the Land of the Mangaboos where the people consist of vegetables. The Wizard of Oz also arrives there, and the Mangaboos evict them from their country.

They take a subterranean journey through the Valley of Voe, are briefly imprisoned in the Land of Naught, and encounter a cavern full of Dragonettes. Eventually they come to a dead-end cavern, where Ozma uses the Magic Belt to bring them to the Land of Oz.

In the Emerald City Jim runs a race against the Sawhorse, and when one of the Wizard's Nine Tiny Piglets goes missing, Eureka is put on trial. Eventually the Wizard is invited to stay in Oz, but Dorothy, Zeb, and their animals decide to return home. (Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz)

Zeb with Dorothy

Zeb is said to be the husband of Dorothy Gale and the father of Dot Hugson and Neddie Hugson in The Oz Kids. In some rural communities, marriages between cousins have traditionally been common.

He was going to be a main character in the unmade Rainbow Road to Oz film played by Lonnie Burr.

References[]

  1. Zeb says: "Uncle Bill Hugson married your Uncle Henry's wife's sister; so we must be second cousins,". This is actually incorrect. A second cousin is the child of a cousin of your parents. Zeb is Dorothy's mother's brother's wife's sister's husband's brother's son.
