Wizard of Oz - 1993

Game cover

The Wizard of Oz is the name of a video game released for the Nintendo Super NES in 1993 that was made by Manley & Associates which is now part of Electronic Arts and published by the now defunct SETA. It is loosely based on both the 1939 film and also the short-lived 1990 TV series.

Despite its usual negative reception, the artwork within the game is very detailed and there is a good deal of many playable levels as Dorothy and her companions travel down both the Yellow Brick Road and Red Brick Road as they battle many enemies along the way.

There are elements of alternate Oz as the Witch steals Toto right after Dorothy arrives and only is melted after being defeated in battle instead of a pail of water being thrown. Dorothy must go to the Emerald City to give the Ruby Slippers to the Wizard who appears in a green crystal ball. In the end credits, Dorothy and Toto are shown making the trip back to Kansas in the Wizard's balloon instead of using the ruby slippers which lost all their magic.

Summary[]

The game begins with Dorothy and Toto laying in the hay outside with her saying "Oh that Miss Gulch is such a mean witch!" before reciting the lyrics of Over the Rainbow. Toto barks as suddenly the tornado approaches and Dorothy finds herself in Oz without being in the house or causing the death of the Wicked Witch of the East who isn't even mentioned. Glinda appears via bubble and says "Dorothy you possess the ruby slippers. You must take them to the Wizard of Oz in Emerald City. Until then, never take them off, for they possess great magic. Here is my wand to guide you to Emerald City".

Then the Wicked Witch of the West appears in her own bubble to knock into Glinda before saying "I will have those ruby slippers. They belong to me. Just you wait my pretty! But for now, I'll just take this little dog. Maybe we can trade."

After meeting her three companions after passing a certain level for each, they all make their way to defeat the Wicked Witch in order to get Toto back before reaching Emerald City. There the Wizard appears and tells her: "You have fought long and hard to get here. It was important for you to deliver the ruby slippers. But in getting here, you used up all their magic. Now they are just shoes. Neither witch will want them. Thank you Dorothy. For your reward, I am sending you back to Kansas" In the final still Dorothy holding Toto says "there is no place like home".
