The Wizard Returns is the 3rd prequel novella in the Dorothy Must Die series. It was released elctronically on March 3rd, 2015 and is inlcuded in the paperback Dorothy Must Die Stories along with No Place Like Oz and The Witch Must Burn.
Pete (secretly Ozma in disguise) finds the Wizard who has crash landed his balloon trying to get back to "the other place" in a field of Poppies. It is revealed that he has been sleeping there for about 25 Oz years and has no recollection of memory about his identity. Pete knowing that only fairies can get the Wizard back to where he first came from disguises him too so the people of Oz do not recognize him as he also gives him the placeholder name Hex. They travel along as Pete disappears at times so that Hex may go through tests such as one taking place in a refuge of former Winged Monkeys that operates as a seperate "Queendom" by a Queen Lulu.
When the Wizard finally gets to the realm of the fairies, they explain that he has the choice to go to the other place and become a wealthy stage magician or to stay in Oz trying to save it from Dorothy's tryany. He picks the latter and such leads up to his role in later entries.
- The Wizard "returning" is much different than how he does in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.
- This is the first novella to be told in a 3rd person narrative as The Straw King and Ruler of Beasts also do.
- The concept of Time in Oz is brought up as 25 Oz years have passed but it would seem that it has been a short while since Dorothy took over as most of what terrible things will happen as predicted by the fairy pool hasn't occured yet. This is relative to No Place Like Oz as it is said that only two years had passed in Kansas. It could be suggested that after Ozma was defeated at the end of that novella, she became Pete and sought to wake up the Wizard either intending to get him out of Oz or knowing full well he would be against Dorothy.
