The Nonestic Ocean is the body of water that surrounds the landmass on which Oz and its neighbors and associated countries are located. (This landmass or "Ozian continent" has been labelled Nonestica by modern researchers.)

Description[]

The "great, green, rolling" Nonestic Ocean is remarkable for the number and variety of islands it contains. These include Pingaree, Regos and Coregos, Phreex, Pirate Island, the Isle of Mifkets, Patrippany, Peakenspire, Nonagon, Octagon, Roaraway and Norroway, Impossipillio, Salamander, Isa Poso, Mount Up, Elbow, Bridge, the Jalacasco Islands, Nowhere At All, Shell City, Snow Island, the Island of Civilized Monkeys, Pessim's Island, the Roly-Rogues' Island, and Conjo's Island; the island of the Palace of Romance; and Tazara with its kingdoms of Amaland and Ozamaland. The castle boat of Dork floats on the Nonestic. The Runaway Country was turned into an island in the Nonestic. Also thought to be located there are Orkland, Thunder Mountain, and the enchanted Island of Yew.

Umbrella Island originated in the Ocean, prior to its departure into the skies becoming one of those floating islands. Volcano Island was a island in the Nonestic before it was shrunk down and moved to Lake Quad. Balloon Island is most likely floating somewhere above the Ocean.

Exotic and submarine locations also occur in the Nonestic Ocean: the realm of King Anko and Queen Aquareine, Mer City, Seeweegia, and the Sea Forest.

There are groups of pirates in the Nonestic Ocean, such as Polacky the Plunderer (whose boat sank shortly after he captured the Island of Ashangabad), and Samuel Salt, who gave up being a pirate to be the Royal Explorer of Oz.

History[]

L. Frank Baum first refers to the Nonestic Ocean by name in the opening chapter of Rinkitink in Oz. Specific locations like Phreex and Yew are mentioned in earlier books.
