Mark Evan Swartz is a contemporary writer on Oz and L. Frank Baum. His book Before the Rainbow: L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on Stage and Screen to 1939, published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2000, studies the earliest dramatic adaptations of Baum's first book, prior to the famous 1939 MGM film version — stage musicals from 1902 through 1918, and silent films from 1908 through 1925.

Swartz is an archivist at the Shubert Archive in New York; he edits The Passing Show, the Archive's biannual journal.
