Gugu is the eponymous king of the Forest of Gugu in the Gillikin Country.

Description[]

Gugu is an enormous yellow leopard. He rules his Forest wisely and responsibly, with the advice of his three councillors, Rango the Gray Ape, Loo the Unicorn, and Bru the Bear. In one unfortunate incident, Gugu was magically transformed into a fat little Gillikin woman, but was soon restored to his proper form. (The Magic of Oz)

In Other Works[]

Gugu plays a heroic part in Eric Shanower's short story "Gugu and the Kalidahs."

He also plays a prominent role in the Romantic Oz book Oz Has Spoken, the third book in the Emerald City Academy series by JB Trepagnier.

In Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz, the Hungry Tiger (Andrea Martin) rules a forest with the help of three large animals, much like Gugu's council.

The New Oz Chronicles[]

The Leopard King of Oz

The Leopard King as features in "The Black Rainbow Of Oz"

The Leopard King appears as a pseudo-villain/fallen monarch in The Black Rainbow of Oz. Initially aligning with Mombi to reclaim royalty that was stripped off him, he becomes the unwitting puppet of a plot that transforms him into a mindless stone bodyguard. Later, he is liberated by his former peers, the Hungry Tiger and the Cowardly Lion, during a climactic faceoff in Gillikin country while Mombi and the Crooked Wizard summon the dark bow over the skies of Oz.
