Changes from original staging[]

  • Costumes and settings have changed extensively.
  • During One Short Day, Glinda and Elphaba arrive at the Emerald City via hot air balloon instead of going by train. Furthermore, the "Wiz-O-Mania" sequence is staged to reassemble a variety show catwalk instead of a musical number.
  • Elphaba flies directly into the audience in Defying Gravity.
  • The transformation of Boq into the Tin Man occurs in-front of the audience instead of backstage behind an armoire wardrobe. In a flash of light, the spell kicks in and instantly transforms his body into tin, then the lantern and grate from Nessa's wheelchair latch onto his head and chest, all while he screams and flails around in agony. This staging makes it crystal clear that the process is horribly painful.
  • At the final performance, the company did a encore performance of Defying Gravity after the curtain call for the audience to film and singalong to. The reprise from that performance can be viewed here.
  • Elphaba has the ability to shoot fireballs when casting spells.
  • The Wizard's alter ego is a robotic marionette played by a live actor instead of a giant head.
  • The staging incorporates the use of projection screens which display video projections instead of LED backdrops.
  • The concept for the staging and proscenium is different in this production. The stage is aligned with cages, wooden stair cases and balconies, as if the story was being told in a giant wooden storage warehouse instead taking place within a giant clock.
