According to L. Frank Baum, the Fairies that are connected to the universe of Oz are the immortal guardians of mankind, ruled by Queen Lulea under the command of Ak the Master Woodsman of the World.

Description[]

Fairies are pretty creatures, with gauzy wings. They live in the ancient forest of Burzee where they love to dance in the moonlight. Their laws forbid them from becoming familiar with their charges; they are supposed to guard the lives of mankind unseen and unknown, although on occasion some have shown themselves to humans and even talked with them. Each fairy is assigned to a mortal to be their guardian from birth to death. After her charge has died, a fairy enjoys a time of rest and is then appointed as guardian to another newborn babe. Fairies are supposed to be just and impartial in their duties.

History[]

Santa Claus is a special friend of the Fairies. They brought tools and utensils when he settled into his home in the Laughing Valley of Hohaho, and they continue to provide him with clothing and warm blankets. During the war against the Awgwas and their allies, the Fairies used their wands to turn the Asiatic Dragons' fiery breath back on them. (The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus)

One evening, during a moment of boredom, the Fairies of Burzee decided to weave a Magic Cloak which would grant its wearer one wish, provided the cloak was not stolen. It was given to a girl named Margaret of Noland and it caused a great deal of trouble between that kingdom and the Land of Ix before Queen Lulea took it back. (Queen Zixi of Ix)

According to Rosalie, a witch who lives in the Pink Country of Sky Island, Button-Bright's Magic Umbrella is enchanted by fairy power, so that it is made to fly and carry passengers through the air by fairies. She also believed correctly that Trot, Cap'n Bill, and Button-Bright are protected by fairies. (Sky Island)
